Estonia’s first public LoRaWAN™ network
The Estonian IT and Communications company Unitcom Eesti OÜ has finished technical tests with the Norwegian telematics and sensor technology company Nordic Automation Systems AS, to enable it to open Estonia’s first public nationwide LoRaWAN™ network: NORAnet. The network will be opened for commercial use on 5 October 2016.
The network will open a new era in the Information and Communication Technology market, where different devices, systems and applications can be connected to the internet and to each other. Healthcare, agriculture, transportation and logistics, consumer electronics and industrial manufacturing are among the key sectors where the LoRaWAN™ network could be used in Estonia.
The Unitcom Eesti OÜ Chairman of the Board, Mr Toomas Peek, said that NORAnet will be available to all customers on an equal basis, including both service and application providers.
“We have finished the technological tests of the network and are currently preparing to open the network to users on the 5th of October,” revealed Mr Peek.
Compared to the existing solutions, a nationwide wireless LoRaWAN™ network will enable true Internet of Things services, because of its low cost and low energy consumption that enables autonomous sensors to operate on batteries for years.
Beginning this year, Unitcom Eesti OÜ, a member of LoRa-Alliance, will operate and manage the overall access to the NORAnet network.
Unitcom Eesti OÜ and Nordic Automation Systems AS have already begun testing different sensors based on LoRaWAN™ – including water, electricity and gas meter readers, as well as environmental and movement sensors – which are offered by Nordic Automation Systems AS. These sensors will provide an opportunity for different user groups to immediately start using the network for real-life applications.
At the time of its opening, the NORAnet network will cover 55% of the Estonian territory, including all of the provincial centres. The network coverage will then be extended by Unitcom Eesti OÜ according to the customers’ needs.
The owner of the NORAnet network is OÜ NORAnet.
