LoRaWAN gas meter module for Elster/Honeywell meters
LoRaWAN smart city applications are growing rapidly with the Internet of Things deployment – including smart metering, street lighting management, smart parking, smart waste management etc.
The Automatic Meter Reading (AMR) sector was predicted to be the largest market for smart meters in 2016. In particular, the required regulatory conditions in the coming years are supporting the high rise of smart meter market for electricity and gas metering. AMR is using wireless communication technology, where readings are collected automatically from utility devices. With attention to gas metering, the benefits of AMR to utilities are much more than just remote metering.
Besides searching for more secure and reliable ways to control energy generation, the cost reduction continues to be the key influencer in the growth of AMR. As a result, businesses have better understanding of energy usage and therefore are able to make more accurate decisions concerning efficiency.
Developed by Nordic Automation Systems, LoRaWAN Absolute Encoder Communication Module (ACM) is the first among such devices, enabling the acquisition of gas consumption data from Elster/Honeywell Absolute Encoder AE2, AE3 and AE5 gas meters.
“While Wireless M-bus communication has range limitations and relies on many gateways,” says Viljo Veesaar, the founder of Nordic Automation Systems, “LoRa gateways collect data from the distances of many miles or kilometres, thus being perfect choice for suburban areas.”
“Long wireless range does not come with the expense of the battery life,” he adds. “10 years “industry standard” battery lifetimes are easily met even while writing consumption data to the cloud every hour.”
LoRaWAN ACM is meant to be attached to the existing Elster gas meters, providing detailed energy consumption information in real-time. The sensor starts gathering data automatically to the server after the installation and may be configured according to each unit. The LoRaWAN module helps to optimise usage of natural resources in the gas metering industry and gain substantial productivity.
Main features:
- pre-installed long-life battery
- configurable reporting interval
- average life 10 years
- long range wireless data transmission
- maintenance free – install & forget
